আজ কুরআন দিবস (১১ মে , ১৯৮৫)

-ঘটনার সূত্রপাত ১৯৮৫ সালের ১০ ই এপ্রিল । পদ্মমল চোপরা ও শীতল সিং নামের দুই ব্যাক্তি কলকাতা হাইকোর্টে বিচারপতি মিসেস খাস্তগীরের আদালতে কুরআনের সকল আরবী কপি ও অনুবাদ বাজেয়াপ্ত করার আবেদন জানিয়ে একটি রীট আবেদন করেন। এর প্রেক্ষিতে ১২ই এপ্রিল’৮৫ বিচারপতি তিন সপ্তাহের মধ্যে এফিডেভিট প্রদানের জন্য রাজ্য সরকারের প্রতি নির্দেশ দেন। এ খবর ছড়িয়ে পড়লে ভারতসহ সারা বিশ্ব প্রতিবাদ মুখর হয়ে ওঠে। বাংলাদেশের মুসলিম জনতাও এর বিরুদ্ধে তীব্র প্রতিবাদ জানাতে থাকে মিছিল সমাবেশের মাধ্যমে ।

-বাংলাদেশে কুরআন দিবসের মূল প্রেক্ষাপট চাপাইনবাবগঞ্জ জেলা । সেদিন (১১ই মে) বিকাল ৩ টায় চাঁপাইনবাবগঞ্জ ঈদগাহ ময়দানে এক প্রতিবাদী জনসভার আয়োজন করা হয়।

-ঐ দিন সকালের দিকে প্রতিবাদ কমিটিকে প্রশাসনের পক্ষ থেকে ডেকে চাপ দিয়ে সভা স্থগিতের জন্য চুক্তি স্বাক্ষর করিয়ে নেয়। প্রশাসন নিজ উদ্যোগে সভা স্থগিত করা হয়েছে মর্মে সভা শুরুর কয়েক ঘন্টা আগে থেকে মাইকিং করা শুরু করে। কিন্ত সাধিরন জনগন ও ছাত্ররা প্রশাসনের বাধা উপেক্ষা করে ঈদগাহ ময়দানে সমবেত হতে থাকে। উচ্ছসিত জনতার মিছিল শ্লোগানে এলাকা মুখরিত হয়ে ওঠে।

-এ সময় কুখ্যাত ম্যাজিস্ট্রেট ওহেদুজ্জামান মোল্লা ক্ষিপ্ত হয়ে জনতাকে গালি গালাজ করতে থাকে এবং কোনভাবেই এখানে সমাবেশ করতে দেয়া হবে না বলে জানায়। এ পরিস্থিতিতে মাওলানা ইসারুল হক ম্যাজিস্ট্রেটেরকাছে শুধুমাত্র মুনাজাত করেই সভা শেষ করে চলে যাওয়ার অনুমতি চান। কিন্তু ম্যাজিস্ট্রেট ওহেদুজ্জামান মোল্লা এ আবেদন প্রত্যাখান করে ।

- এক পর্যায়ে পুলিশ লাঠি চার্জ শুরু করলে জনতার সাথে পুলিশের সংঘর্ষ ছড়িয়ে পড়ে। ম্যাজিস্ট্রেট নিরস্ত্র জনতার ওপর গুলি চালাতে নির্দেশ দিলে ঘটনা স্থলেই এবং পরবর্তীতে হাসপাতালে ৮ জন মৃত্যু বরন করে।

-পুলিশের নিশৃংসতা এতটাই বেড়ে গিয়েছিল যে, গুরুতর আহতদের নিয়ে রাজশাহী হাসপাতালের উদ্দেশ্যে যখন থানার সামনে দিয়ে একটি বাস যাচ্ছিল তখন সেই বাসেও তারা হামলা চালায় এবং গুলি করে একজনকে হত্যা করে এবং হেলপারসহ অনেককে আহত করে

-এই দিনে এদেশের ইসলাম প্রিয় জনতা প্রমাণ করে ইসলামের বিরুদ্ধে যেকোন ষড়যন্ত্র নিজের জীবন দিয়ে হলেও তারা প্রতিরোধ করবে ইনশাল্লাহ্‌ ।

- বিশ্ব মুসলিমের প্রতিবাদের মুখে ভারতের কেন্দ্রীয় সরকার এ মামলাটি খারিজের জন্য এটর্নী জেনারেলকে নির্দেশ দেয়। ১৩ই মে কলিকাতা হাইকোর্টের বিচারপতি বি. সি. বসাকের আদালতে স্থানান্তরিত হলে মামলাটি তিনি খারিজ করে দেন।

Islamic Science, the Scholar and Ethics
Let us take a moment to ponder over a powerfully incisive thought from one of the greatest Muslim scholars of all time, Al-Ghazali
God has created the spirit of man out of a drop of his own light; its destiny is to return to Him. Do not deceive yourself with the vain imagination that it will die when the body dies. The form you had on your entrance into this world, and your present form, are not the same; hence there is no necessity of your perishing on account of the perishing of your body. Your spirit came into this world a stranger; it is only sojourning in a temporary home. From the trials and tempests of this troublesome life, our refuge is in God. In reunion with Him we shall find eternal rest – rest without sorrow, joy without pain, strength without infirmity, knowledge without doubt, a tranquil and yet an ecstatic vision of the source of life and light and glory, the source from which we came.
Iqbal, like his predecessors al-Ghazali and Ibn Khaldun, states that "total reflection also includes inner reflection, and the pursuit of knowledge should not be divorced from ethical and value criteria." Hence, one could indeed argue that experimental and empirical efforts cannot be completely divorced from one's heart, inner intuition, insight or conscience. Reason and revelation go hand in hand, it would then seem, while science and knowledge are at once personal and social. Sadar adds that,
Scientists are accountable to God for their activities, they are required both to serve the community and to protect and promote its ethical and moral institutions. The way they use science, therefore, must reflect the values of the society they seek to serve. Thus, the Quranic approach to science is at once dynamic and static: it promotes reason, objectivity and the pursuit of truth and excellence, but at the same time, it places this endeavour firmly within the boundaries of Islamic ethics and values.
The pursuit of knowledge has a very important place in Islam, but it is subservient to Quranic values and ethics. In the Qur'an, knowledge and righteousness must go hand-in-hand. The Qur'an promises good rewards and high rank for those who possess knowledge coupled with faith and practice. According to Al-Faruqi, Islamic science is the `practical knowledge that produces results and leads to virtue, the object of the Muslim's prayer: "Oh God grant us a knowledge that is useful and beneficial."' Under Islam, science serves the goals of society. The goals of an Islamic society are to increase brotherhood and spiritual awareness and reduce consumption. A science with these goals has to be different in nature and style from science as it is practised today. Furthermore, these goals cannot be pursued by any means. They can only be pursued by those means which are permitted by Islam.
Hence, Islamic civilisation, unlike today's Western, secular civilisation, does not differentiate between matters of `state' and matters of religion. It is a religion, a way of life and a code of conduct for individuals, families and societies simultaneously. Moreover, Islam does not just preach good religious practice, but also, and above all, Islam encourages good deeds, that are not to be done just occasionally but in all acts and decisions, in all spheres and realms. The Qur'an, indeed, repeatedly stresses the `amal salih (good deed). Furthermore, in Islam, there are no priests or intermediaries who can forgive a sinner on behalf of God. No Prophet died for a nation's sins. Each and everyone is responsible before God for their own deeds, good and bad. From the layman to the man with great power or knowledge, all are accountable for their acts. Thus the Muslim is literally commanded to do good and right only.
Even a Muslim with a little faith, is nevertheless required to act and implement this faith in his daily life. Thus, whether he is in business or in war, the Muslim acts as well as he can, which explains why, even in the heat of battle and amidst so much brutality, Muslims should still adhered to the true, compassionate code towards the vast majority, i.e. the innocents. The high moral ethics of Islam, are thus second nature and permeate all human activity. These, then, are the philosophical and sociological considerations and some of the priorities which make Islamic science an entirely different enterprise from science as it is practiced today. It can be seen that the motivational and governing forces of this science were religious and cultural, and gave Islamic science a direction that was different from that of contemporary Western science.
A broad spectrum of scientists in the Muslim world have discussed Islamic and secular approaches to science. While science itself is neutral, it is the scientist's approach that moulds science into an Islamic or secular entity; 'science is Islamised by the way we practice it and utilize it.' The Islamic approach recognises the limitations of the human mind and acknowledges that all knowledge is the property of God. Humility, recognising the limits of scientific method, and respect for the object of study are primary lessons that can be adopted at the very start of the journey to rediscover the heritage and contemporary meaning of Islamic science. This is in essence, the message of Islamic science to the world. The scientific tradition of Islam is based on the profound intuition of the interdependence and interrelation of all things in the universe, including of course our planetary environment.
Consideration for higher ethics under Islam is expressed in many ways. As early as the 9th century, the physician Ishaq bin Ali Rahawi wrote the first treatise on `adab al-tabib, i.e. medical ethics. In this treatise, Rahawi labels physicians as "guardians of souls and bodies" and in this treatise he spells out all the deeds and acts a Muslim physician must observe. Al-Razi, too, in his medical work did so much to `humanise' medicine by taking into consideration the patient's problems and attitudes. "The doctor's aim is to do good, even to our enemies, so much more to our friends, and my profession forbids us to do harm to our kindred, as it is instituted for the benefit and welfare of the human race, and God imposed on physicians the oath not to compose mortiferous remedies."
The distinguishing feature that made Islamic medicine quite remarkable was its unsurpassed ethics. Muslim hospitals served people irrespective of religion, colour or background, by staff that operated on a completely equal footing, whether Christians, Jews, or other minorities. A Muslim doctor was also identified as 'Hakim', which in Arabic translates as 'wise'. Muslim physicians practiced with the guidance of God present in their minds. Hence, unlike secular medicine today, Muslim practitioners did not perform abortions or sex change operations. Nor did wealth decide who to treat and how. Muslim physicians also had obligations to their patients, community and colleagues that are difficult to imagine in practice today.
In Rahawi's book there are twenty chapters, which include:
  • What the physician must avoid and beware of,
  • The manners of visitors,
  • The care of remedies by the physician,
  • The dignity of the medical profession,
  • The examination of physicians, and
  • The removal of corruption among physicians.
This same attitude was observed towards the wider world. Al-Faruqi points out that the natural world and all its splendour is for the Muslim a 'ni'mah, a blessed gift of God's bounty, granted to man to use and to enjoy [...] not man's to possess or to destroy, or to use in any way detrimental to himself and to humanity, or to itself as God's creation." Further "since nature is God's work, His ayah or sign, and the instrument of His purpose which is the absolute good [...] the Muslim treats nature with respect and demonstrates deep gratitude to its beneficial Creator and Bestower. Any transformation of it must have a purpose clearly beneficial to all before it can be declared legitimate." Muslim scientists, whether Ibn al-Haytham in his optics, or Al-Biruni in his study of India, sought to understand nature, their respect for which was almost reverential, not to dominate the object of their study. Sardar notes that Bacon's dictum that "nature yields her secrets under torture" would have sent shudders down al-Biruni's spine. Indeed, Al-Faruqi had made a remarkable comparative exercise between Islamic science, that of its predecessors, the Greeks, and that of the contemporary West. 'Greek science,' they explain, was too intoxicated with the beauty of nature per se and regarded the tragic outcome of naturalism itself as natural. Since the Renaissance, modern Western civilisation has had the highest regard for tragedy. Its zeal for naturalism took it to the extreme of accepting nature without morality, as a supernatural condition. Since the struggle of Western man has been against the Church and all that it represents, the progress of man in science was conceived as liberation from its clutches. Hence, it was extremely hard even to contemplate a world affirmation or naturalism that was attached to normative threads stretching from a priori, noumenal, absolute source. Without such threads, naturalism is bound to end up in a state of self-contradiction, with internal conflicts that are ex hypothesi insoluble. The Olympian community could not live in harmony with itself and had to destroy itself. Its world affirmation was in vain.
Modern science, which is primarily Western, unlike Islamic science, has endless preoccupations that have very little consideration with regards to ethics. Nature, for instance, has only recently begun to receive its due after centuries of savage 'development'. Even if there is an awareness of the effects of global warming, there is still barely any shift in Western consumer behaviour towards reducing the use of fuel. Furthermore, to the modern scientists, what is scientific supersedes everything else. Thus, in this respect, anything goes: the scientific and that which is defined as such. Furthermore, for the sake of 'science' so much pollution and destruction – devastation, in fact – occurs on a daily basis; whole species have become extinct in the name of progress. Entire peoples, regions, oceans, and animals of all sorts have also been sacrificed for the sake of science. The natural world is used for, or exposed to atomic tests, while horrendously depraved weapons have been tested in wars, while torturous new devices are trailed on prisoners of war. Scientists also develop poisonous gases that were used to exterminate millions of young men already in horrific conditions on the battlefields of Europe in the First World War, to Vietnam, and beyond.
There is also, of course, the issue of money. Under Islam, science was developed with the Godly injunction of doing good for humanity and nature. In our times however, the sponsor calls the shots. Sometimes the interests of humanity and finance meet, often they don't. Money, then, takes precedence. Moreover, as the financier provides direction, the morality of science is not longer in the hands of the scientist. In a world dominated by monopolies, greed, and the absence of morality, it is impossible for science and ethics to work together in harmony. Solzhenitsyn summarised this in his inaugural address at Harvard University in 1978, stating that "the most impressive scientific and technological achievements could not redeem the moral poverty so prevalent in the Western world."
Freedom is indeed, one such concept that has its limits in Islam. Freedom of expression has a divine sanction in Islam. No one, nor any man-made law, can take this birthright away from someone else. Freedom of expression is not only a right in Islam but an obligation, and one who tries to deny criticism and counter-criticism is openly at war with Islam. This is why criticism has been institutionalised in the Islamic concept of muhasabah, which embraces both criticism and self-criticism, including intellectual, political and social, correction of errors, being prepared to accept corrections, trial, giving account, and taking disciplinary measures or actions. The Prophet explained the obligation to criticise by asking his followers to imagine a ship at sea which was carrying passengers. Some of them were seated on the deck while others were seated below. One of those below started drilling a hole where he was sitting. If the other passengers were to stop him (and this would be a duty on the passengers below and on deck), his life would be saved, along with the lives of the other passengers and crew; if they let him carry on, they would all drown.
Like all freedoms, however, Islam couples freedom of expression with social responsibility. In the West, the book has become an icon; its contents are irrelevant; freedom of expression is equated with the book itself. In Islam, the book is symbolic, but its contents are important too. It can be used to offer any criticism, question anything including even the notion of the divine itself, focus discussion on any aspect of the entire spectrum of human experience and ideas. But, because it is held in such high esteem, it cannot be allowed to be used as a vehicle for abuse or the dishonour of individuals in society in the name of criticism. Criticise as much as you wish, tear arguments or ideas limb from limb, but do not attack the honour or the person by abuse, ridicule or mockery. This is the responsibility that Islam places on the freedom of expression.
Under Islam, authors always began with the formula 'In the name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate', and with salutation to the Prophet. Any Muslim author begs God to grant him the grace and strength to carry through his enterprise and for the very best of results. Muslim scholars quoted on every suitable occasion verses from the Qur'an, as well as hadith, in support of their arguments. Under Islam, Bucaille states,
men were more steeped in the religious spirit than they are today; but in the Islamic world, this did not prevent them from being both believers and scientists. Science was the twin of religion and it should never have ceased to be so.

Fourteenth century Islamic civilization in Southwest Asia and North Africa played a pivotal role in integrating
Africa, Asia and Europe into a network of trade and cultural exchange that stimulated global exploration and the
transformation of the world. Documents 1-3 are intended for full class instruction; A-E for group work and class
presentations. For a DBQ, students can answer the question: How do the 14th century journals of Ibn Battuta
document increasing global interaction? All materials are edited.
1. Who was Abu Abdullah Ibn Battuta?
The years from 1000 to 1500 AD were a period of expansion for Islam in Asia, Europe and Africa. Followers
of Islam migrated to new lands and spread their religious beliefs. Islamic armies conquered other peoples.
Merchants introduced their religion to other parts of the world as they established new trade routes.
Abu Abdullah Ibn Battuta (Abu Abdullah, son of Battuta) was born in Tangiers (in present day Morocco) in
1304. About the same time, the Mongol military rulers of Persia and west central Asia converted to Islam. As an
adulthood, Ibn Battuta was able to travel widely under the protection of the Islamic religion.
As a young man, Abu Abdullah Ibn Battuta studied law. In 1325, he left his homeland and made a holy
pilgrimage, or hajj, to Mecca and Medina on the Arabian peninsula. Ibn Battuta became a scholar and visited
Islamic centers of learning and traveled to new areas seeking employment, adventure and honor.

two years and produced a rihla, or
book of travels. After completing the
book, Abu Abdullah Ibn Battuta
became a judge in a small Moroccan
town. As far as we know, he never
traveled again. Ibn Battuta died in
1368.
Modern day countries such as
Morocco did not exist in the
fourteenth century. Ibn Battuta would
have described himself as a Muslim,
part of the large group of people who
identified with the teachings or
Mohammed and the Holy Qur’an.

A. Ibn Battuta travels to Egypt, Syria and Arabia
At the age of 21, Ibn Battuta left Tangier to make the hajj. It was both a holy journey and an
adventure. The trip by land from Tangier to Mecca was a 3,000 mile journey across the coastal plains,
deserts, and mountains of Mediterranean Africa. Even though the journey was dangerous, pious Muslim
scholars made the trek to perform the pilgrimage and study in the mosques and colleges of Egypt, Syria,
and Arabia. Ibn Battuta joined a caravan and spent eight to nine months reaching Egypt.
In Egypt, Ibn Battuta visited Cairo and toured the Nile Valley. He probably attended lessons on the
shari’a at the madrasas, or colleges for the study of law and the religious sciences. He later visited
Hebron and Jerusalem in Palestine. Hebron was important to Muslims, Jews and Christians because it was
the burial place of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, founders of the shared monotheistic tradition. Jerusalem, a
small town of 10,000, was filled with shrines that attracted numerous pilgrims and scholars. For Jews, the
center of religious focus was the ancient Temple; for Christians it was the church of the Holy Sepulcher;
and for Muslims it was the Haram al-Sharif. Within the Haram al-Sharif were several holy sites. The most
important was the Dome of the Rock. According to Muslim belief, from this spot Mohammed was
transported to the Seventh Heaven of Paradise to stand in the presence of God.
Moving on to Damascus, Ibn Battuta prepared for the hajj. Every member of the hajj party had to
carry most of his or her own supplies southward across the Arabian desert. A generous donor provided
Ibn Battuta with a camel and money for the pilgrimage. The journey from Damascus to Medina was about
820 miles and took 45 to 50 days. Medina is the second most holy city for Muslims. It was Mohammed’s
home for a time, and he is buried there with his wife Fatima.
The final trek to Mecca was a dusty journey across 200 miles of desert. Not far from Mecca, male
pilgrims entered a state of spiritual readiness and ritual purity by shedding their ordinary clothes and
putting on two large flat sheets of cloth to form a garment called the ihram. One cloth was wrapped
around the upper body and draped over the left shoulder. Women dressed modestly, without jewelry and
without their faces covered. All this was preparation for entering a state of holiness. In Mecca, arguing,
cutting of hair or nails, killing of animals and sexual intercourse were prohibited.
The pilgrims arrived at the city before dawn and went immediately to the grand mosque called the
Haram or Sanctuary. Here they worshipped by performing the tawaf. They walked seven times
counterclockwise around the Ka’ba, the great stone cube that stands in the center of the mosque. This
granite block is covered by a black veil, which is encircled with an inscription in golden Arabic letters.
The interior of the Ka’ba is simply furnished and contains a copy of the Qur’an. On the exterior of the
eastern corner is embedded the Black Stone which Mohammed is said to have kissed. It is about 12 inches
in diameter and is set in silver. According to Qur’anic tradition, the Ka’ba was built by Abraham to
acclaim the one God. Later, polytheistic tribes made it into a house of idols. In the seventh century,
Mohammed rededicated it to belief in one God.
Ibn Battuta met new people from all around the Muslim world who had also gathered for the hajj.
Many poor pilgrims lived in the mosque while they were in Mecca. They ate, slept, and prayed there. The
mosque was busy day and night with worshipers. In order to complete the hajj, Ibn Battuta joined other
pilgrims to journey east of the city through desert ravines to the plain of Arafat. The ceremonies in the
desert make up the heart of the annual hajj or Great Pilgrimage. Many pilgrims soon returned home to
their ordinary lives. For Ibn Battuta, this was an end and a beginning. He had no intentions of returning to
Morocco. He had earned the title al-Hajj, which gave him respect in learned circles, and was now ready to
continue his travels.

B. Ibn Battuta travels to Mesopotamia, Persia, Arabia, and East Africa
In 1326, Ibn Battuta left Mecca in a caravan to Mesopotamia (present day Iraq). In Basra, on the
Persian Gulf, he hired a boat and explored the marshes of the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers. Ibn Battuta
was a Sunni Muslim. Sunnis believe that Qur’anic revelation are to be interpreted by consensus of the
community, not by a leader with special knowledge and wisdom. In this region of Mesopotamia and in
Persia (present day Iran), he encountered settlements of Shi’a Muslims. Shi’a believe that a leadermessiah,
a descendant of Mohammed’s son-in-law Ali, will return and make the earth truthful and
righteous until the time of the Last Judgment. Until then, a spiritual leader must guide the Muslim
community and interpret the Qur’an. Ibn Battuta was not sympathetic toward the Shi’a because he
believed they were in error in their beliefs. At a shrine in a village in Mesopotamia, Ibn Battuta observed
Sufi Muslim devotees dancing and twirling to the beat of drums. Some Sufi brethren danced barefoot on
hot coals. Ibn Battuta did not support this sort of religious fervor.
Traveling on to Baghdad, Ibn Battuta found a city recovering from the Mongol invasion of 1258.
Mosques were being restored and scholarly learning was progressing. The Mongols had conquered the
Persians, but in a sense the Persians ended up conquering the Mongols by converting them to Islam and
Persian culture. Ibn Battuta was invited to travel with the Sultan of Persia. On one trip he went to Tabriz,
a city in northwestern Persia, inhabited by two to three hundred thousand people. This town was the main
intersection for the Mediterranean, Central Asia and Indian Ocean trade routes.
In 1330, Ibn Battuta reports that he went to the Red Sea port of Jidda and boarded a ship of a type
called a dhow. These vessels had wooden hulls made of planks that were tied together with cords of fiber
and triangular sails. Ibn Battuta became seasick and had to be put ashore. After that, he traveled to Aden,
the great commercial port at the junction of the Red and Arabian Seas.
Southwest Asia was a hub connecting Africa, Asia and Europe. Goods moving among these regions
had to pass this bottleneck. Ibn Battuta took advantage of this trade activity to join a group of Muslim
merchants setting sail from Aden for ports along the East African coast.
The dhow he traveled on sailed under winter monsoon winds and reached the port of Mogadishu (in
present day Somalia) in 15 days. Ships coming to this city brought porcelain, silk, glassware, books,
paper and tools. They were exchanged for ivory, gold, frankincense, myrrh, animal skins, ambergris, rice,
mangrove poles, and slaves. In Mogadishu, the local religious scholars treated Ibn Battuta to a meal of
stew with chicken, fish, and vegetables served over rice and cooked in ghee (unclarified butter). They also
ate bananas in milk and a dish of sour milk with green ginger, mangoes, pickled lemons, and chilies. Ibn
Battuta boarded a ship to visit the region south of the equator. Kilwa was the center of the East African
gold trade. Here on the edge of Dar al-Islam, Ibn Battuta was delighted to find stone houses with sunken
courtyards and indoor plumbing. The well-to-do people wore silk and fine jewelry and ate from porcelain
dishes.
Because of summer monsoons winds, which blow off the African continent toward Asia, Ibn Battuta
returned quickly to the southern shore of Arabia. He crossed the rugged heartland of Oman and returned
once again to Mecca.

C. Ibn Battuta travels to Anatolia and the Asian Steppe
In the 13th century, the Mongols and Turkish allies established domination over eastern and central
Anatolia. The Mongols tightly regulated the vast areas they controlled. The result was the Pax Mongolica,
or period of peace in the region. Anatolia was known in ancient times as Asia Minor (today it is called
Turkey). Ibn Battuta described it as one of the finest regions in the world with people who were cleanly
dressed and delicious food. In Ibn Battuta’s time, the region was in a state of political and cultural
transition as Muslim Turks defeated the Christian Byzantine Empire. As an Islamic territory, Anatolia
became a center for trade in metal wares, leather, silk woolens, grain, fur, timber and slaves.
Ibn Battuta was hosted at the courts of Turkish princes and honored as a religious and legal scholar.
The Turkish rulers, all descendants of rough-hewn warriors, were anxious to acquire the fine points of
their new faith and the sacred law. One ruler, Sultan Orkhan, asked Ibn Battuta to write down traditions of
the Prophet which were translated into Turkish.
From Anatolia, Ibn Battuta crossed the Black Sea on a ship bound for the Crimea. He made his way
to Kaffa, which had a large community of Christian merchants from Genoa. In the middle of the night, he
heard church bells ring. As a Muslim, Ibn Battuta considered bells to be a devilish form of sacrilege.
From the minaret of a mosque, he began to loudly chant the Qur’an and the call to prayer. The local qadi
stopped him because he feared that Ibn Battuta might provoke hostility between Muslims and European
Christians.
Ibn Battuta continued to Al-Quram, the provincial capital of the Mongol kingdom known in European
history as the Golden Horde. Al-Quaram was a staging area for trans-Asian caravans. Ibn Battuta
purchased three wagons equipped with round tents called yurts, and joined a caravan to Kipchak.
When Ibn Battuta met Ozbeg Khan, the Mongol ruler of Kipchak, he was seated in a huge golden yurt
on a silver throne surrounded by his four wives, or khatuns. Ibn Battuta was struck by the equality
Turkish and Mongol women enjoyed with men. The khatuns owned lands of their own and sometimes
made administrative decisions or signed decrees. When the senior khatun entered the golden tent, the
khan went to the entrance of the pavilion, greeted her, escorted her to her couch, and did not sit himself
until she was seated. Unlike the secluded women of Southwest Asia, the khatun was in full view and
unveiled. One khatun was the daughter of the Byzantine Emperor. Hers was an arranged marriage,
designed to improve relations between the Mongols and the Christian Byzantines. This princess received
permission to return to Constantinople to give birth to a child in her father’s palace. Ibn Battuta asked and
received permission to go with her.
As soon as the princess entered Byzantine territory, she changed her behavior. She left behind the
Islamic prayers, drank wine, and ate pork (a meat forbidden by the Qur’an). After reaching
Constantinople, the khan’s wife stayed with her father. Ibn Battuta visited all the sights of the city,
including the church of Hagia Sophia. He did not enter the church because he would have had to prostrate
himself before the cross. When winter arrived, Ibn Battuta returned to the steppe. He wore three fur coats,
two pairs of trousers, two pairs of socks, and boots lined with bear skin. He had to be helped onto his
horse because he had on so many clothes.
Ibn Battuta decided to make his way to India. He led an entourage south across the steppe, then
crossed the Hindu Kush, where the snow was so deep that clots had to be spread in front of the camels so
they could walk. When he descended into the Indus Valley, he joined other Muslims, who looked to India
and the Muslim ruler there for employment. Though the date is unclear, he probably arrived in India in
1333.

D. Ibn Battuta travels to India and maybe to China
Once on the coast of the Arabian Sea, Ibn Battuta hired four ships. Their crews included African
spearmen and bowmen who had a long tradition of serving on ships in the Indian Ocean. In Calicut
(modern day Calcutta), Muslims and Hindus greeted the diplomatic mission with drums, trumpets and
horns. Arrangements were made for the group and their belongings to sail on one large Chinese-style
vessel called a junk. This type of ship was made of double timbers attached together with nails. The hull
was divided into compartments which kept the ship from sinking even if was pierced below the waterline.
A junk could have five or more masts, stern rudders, up to five decks, enclosed cabins, private lavatories,
fire fighting equipment, steward service, lifeboats and common rooms. Ibn Battuta boarded a large junk,
then transferred at the last minute to a smaller one. A storm came up while he was still on shore and the
ships had to leave the harbor. The junk Ibn Battuta was to sail on sank.
The Rihla describes Ibn Battuta’s journey to China, but some historians questions whether he really
made the trip or is reporting on voyages made by other merchants. The trip to China was possible because
the Mongol dynasty favored international trade. Cities on China’s southern coast teemed with Muslim
merchants and Ibn Battuta would have found a welcoming community.
Ibn Battuta claimed to have sailed from the Malay Peninsula to Sumatra, then around the Strait of
Malacca to the Chinese harbor city of Ch’uan-chou. He described silks, porcelains, and a variety of foods.
He thought the Chinese clever for using paper money and found the travel safe, but was uncomfortable
living among people who were not interested in being Muslims. The Rihla asserts that Ibn Battuta
traveled to Canton and finally to Hang-chou and Beijing by way of the grand canal. However, most
historians doubt that he could have traveled further than the southern coastal cities.

Muslim Turks from Afghanistan conquered a large
part of India in the thirteenth century. By 1333, Muslims
formed a ruling elite on top of a stratified Hindu society.
Mohammed Ibn Tughluq, the Turkish sultan, united all
north and central India for the first time since the Gupta
empire of the 5th century. The sultan made Ibn Battuta a
judge. Since the Moroccan could not speak Persian
fluently, he was assigned two scholars to assist him.
Mohammed Tughluq later asked Ibn Battuta to lead an
official delegation to China to present gifts to the
Mongol emperor.
The Chinese emperor, a descendant of Kublai Khan,
had sent Ibn Tughluq gifts of slaves, textiles, robes,
dishware, and swords. When the caravan was about 75
miles south of Delhi, it was attacked by Hindu bandits.
Ibn Battuta escaped after bribing a guard. He wandered
the countryside for seven days until his traveling
companions came to his rescue.

E. Ibn Battuta travels to Morocco, Spain and Mali
When Ibn Battuta returned to Damascus, he found people dying from the Black Plague. The plague
may have originally developed among ground burrowing rodents on the inner Asian steppe. Humans
caught the disease from fleas that had been in the fur of infected animals. Because both rats and fleas
were carried on caravans along with trade goods, the plague easily infected people who were moving
from town to town.
By the end of 1350, about one third of all Europeans were dead. Muslims in North Africa and
Southwest Asia suffered just as much. People blamed the disease on polluted winds from the steppes and
were urged to live in fresh air, sprinkle their homes with rose water and vinegar, sit motionless, or eat
pickled onions and fresh fruit. The disease was treated by applying egg yolks to the sores, spreading fresh
flowers on the sickbed, and above all, by prayer. Ibn Battuta escaped the Black Death. After making the
hajj one more time, he decided to return to Tangier. On the way home, he learned his mother had died of
the plague several months earlier.
Ibn Battuta visited the royal capital of Fez in Morocco, stopped briefly in Tangier, then made his way
to Ceuta where people from Spain were coming to flee the plague. After recovering from malaria, he
joined volunteers who were defending Gibraltar against Christian attack. He visited the mountainous
Muslim sultanate of Grenada in Spain where he met Ibn Juzayy, a young literary scholar who would later
record his adventures.
After returning to Morocco, Ibn Battuta crossed the High Atlas Mountains and joined a trans-Saharan
caravan at the commercial city of Sijilmasa on the northern edge of the desert. After 25 days, the caravan
reached the settlement of Taghaza, a salt mining center. It was a grim place where salt slabs were
exchanged for gold. Slaves dug the salt and loaded it onto the camels. All the food had to be imported.
Ibn Battuta slept in a house made completely of salt except for the camel-skinned roof. Loaded with salt
slabs, the caravan left Taghaza and crossed five hundred miles of desert.
After several weeks, Ibn Battuta arrived in the
capital of Mali. He ate yams or some other root that had
not been cooked long enough to remove its natural
poison and was sick for two months. When he finally
recovered, he attended a memorial ceremony for a sultan
at the palace. The sultan entered the pavilion, preceded
by three hundred slaves, two saddled and bridled horses,
and two rams as defense against the evil eye. However,
when Ibn Battuta was introduced to the ruler, he
received to his dismay a gift of only three loaves of
bread, a piece of beef, and a gourd filled with yogurt. In
February 1353, Ibn Battuta went by camel to Timbuktu,
which was just then developing as a trade center.
Moving on to Gao, a source of copper, he became ill
again and was cared for by a Moroccan. Shortly after
this, he received a request from the sultan of Morocco to
return home.

When he arrived in Fez, the sultan commanded him to set down an account of his travels. He did this
with the assistance of Ibn Juzayy, the young scholar he had met in Granada. After dictating his story, Ibn
Battuta probably remained in Morocco leading a quiet life. He died in 1368 or 1369.

Medicine: Muslim Invention 
 

The science of Medicine flourished during the Middle Ages throughout the Islamic dynasty. The medical wealth of the Muslim physicians available in the form of practices, encyclopedias and scripts enlightened Europe for 5 centuries. Arnold and Guillaume in "Legacy of Islam" on Islamic science and medicine stated:

"Looking back we may say that Islamic medicine and science reflected the light of the Hellenic sun, when its day had fled, and that they shone like a moon, illuminating the darkest night of the European middle Ages; that some bright stars lent their own light, and that moon and stars alike faded at the dawn of a new day - the Renaissance. Since they had their share in the direction and introduction of that great movement, it may reasonably be claimed that they are with us yet."

Kitab Al-Ma'a (The Book of Water) appears to be a strange title for the first known Encyclopedia of Medicine arranged according to the alphabet. It was recently discovered in Algeria and published in Oman.

The author's apparent reason for naming the book as Kitab Al-Ma'a was because the word Al-Ma'a (the water) appears first in the book.

The author was Abu Mohammed Abdellah Ibn Mohammed Al-Azdi, known as Ibno Al-Thahabi, (died 1033 AD, 466 AH) in Valencia, Muslim Spain.

He was actually born in the city of Suhar, Oman. He moved into Basra then to Persia where he studied under Al-Biruni and Ibn Sina. Later he migrated to Bait Al-Maqdis (Jerusalem) and finally settled in Valencia.

The manuscript contains about nine hundred pages. Under each letter of the alphabet, there are names of an illness, a medicine, a physiological process or a treatment. This is the first known alphabetical classification of medical terms.

In this encyclopedia, Ibn Al-Thahabi not only lists the names but adds numerous original ideas about the function of the human organs.

Indeed, he explains an original idea of how the vision takes place. He described how seeing is a process of an image which goes through the pupil of the eye and strikes the vision nerves. The brain, then, unifies the two images into one and stores it in its memory bank. Such explanation resembles the vision theory of Ibn Al-Haitham who died in 1040, just 33 years before the death of Ibn Al-Thahabi. However, it is not certain whether they met or were aware of each other's work.

The book contains treatment, usually herbal, of a vast number of ailments and diseases. It also contains a course for the treatment psychological symptoms. The main thesis of his medication is that cure must start from controlled food and exercise and if it persists then use specific individual medicines if it still persists then use medical compounds.

The manuscript has recently been edited by Dr. Hadi Hamoudi and published by the Ministry of National Heritage and Culture, Oman, 1996.

What is Taught: The Italian Giovanni Morgagni is regarded as the father of pathology because he was the first to correctly describe the nature of disease.
What Should be Taught: Islam's surgeons were the first pathologists. They fully realized the nature of disease and described a variety of diseases to modern detail. Ibn Zuhr correctly described the nature of pleurisy, tuberculosis and pericarditis.

Az-Zahrawi accurately documented the pathology of hydrocephalus (water on the brain) and other congenital diseases. Ibn al-Quff and Ibn an-Nafs gave perfect descriptions of the diseases of circulation.

Other Muslim surgeons gave the first accurate descriptions of certain malignancies, including cancer of the stomach, bowel and esophagus. These surgeons were the originators of pathology, not Giovanni Morgagni.


What is Taught: Paul Ehrlich (19th century) is the originator of drug chemotherapy, that is the use of specific drugs to kill microbes.

10th Century

What Should be Taught: Muslim physicians used a variety of specific substances to destroy microbes. They applied sulfur topically specifically to kill the scabies mite. Ar-Razi (10th century) used mercurial compounds as topical antiseptics.

What is Taught: Purified alcohol, made through distillation, was first produced by Arnau de Villanova, a Spanish alchemist, in 1300 A.D.
What Should be Taught: Numerous Muslim chemists produced medicinal-grade alcohol through distillation as early as the 10th century and manufactured on a large scale the first distillation devices for use in chemistry. They used alcohol as a solvent and antiseptic.

What is Taught: The first surgery performed under inhalation anesthesia was conducted by C.W. Long, an American, in 1845.

What is Taught: During the 16th century Paracelsus invented the use of opium extracts for anesthesia.
What Should be Taught: Muslim physicians introduced the anesthetic value of opium derivatives during the Middle Ages. Opium was originally used as an anesthetic agent by the Greeks. Paracelus was a student of Ibn Sina's works from which it is almost assured that he derived this idea.

What is Taught: Modern anesthesia was invented in the 19th century by Humphrey Davy and Horace Wells.
What Should be Taught: Modern anesthesia was discovered, mastered and perfected by Muslim anesthetists 900 years before the advent of Davy and Wells. They utilized oral as well as inhalant anesthetics.

What is Taught: The concept of quarantine was first developed in 1403. In Venice, a law was passed preventing strangers from entering the city until a certain waiting period had passed. If, by then, no sign of illness could be found, they were allowed in.

What Should be Taught:
 The concept of quarantine was first introduced in the 7th century A.D. by the prophet Muhammad, who wisely warned against entering or leaving a region suffering from plague.
As early as the 10th century, Muslim physicians innovated the use of isolation wards for individuals suffering with communicable diseases.

What is Taught: The scientific use of antiseptics in surgery was discovered by the British surgeon Joseph Lister in 1865.
What Should be Taught: As early as the 10th century, Muslim physicians and surgeons were applying purified alcohol to wounds as an antiseptic agent. Surgeons in Islamic Spain utilized special methods for maintaining antisepsis prior to and during surgery.
They also originated specific protocols for maintaining hygiene during the post-operative period. Their success rate was so high that dignitaries throughout Europe came to Cordova, Spain, to be treated at what was comparably the "Mayo Clinic" of the Middle Ages.

What is Taught: In 1545, the scientific use of surgery was advanced by the French surgeon Ambroise Pare.Prior to him, surgeons attempted to stop bleeding through the gruesome procedure of searing the wound with boiling oil. Pare stopped the use of boiling oils and began ligating arteries. He is considered the "father of rational surgery." Pare was also one of the first Europeans to condemn such grotesque "surgical" procedures as trepanning (see reference #6, pg. 110).

What Should be Taught: Islamic Spain's illustrious surgeon, az-Zahrawi (d. 1013), began ligating arteries with fine sutures over 500 years prior to Pare. He perfected the use of Catgut, that is suture made from animal intestines.Additionally, he instituted the use of cotton plus wax to plug bleeding wounds.
The full details of his works were made available to Europeans through Latin translations. Despite this, barbers and herdsmen continued be the primary individuals practicing the "art" of surgery for nearly six centuries after az-Zahrawi's death. Pare himself was a barber, albeit more skilled and conscientious than the average ones. Included in az-Zahrawi's legacy are dozens of books.
His most famous work is a 30 volume treatise on medicine and surgery. His books contain sections on preventive medicine, nutrition, cosmetics, drug therapy, surgical technique, anesthesia, pre and post-operative care as well as drawings of some 200 surgical devices, many of which he invented. The refined and scholarly az-Zahrawi must be regarded as the father and founder of rational surgery, not the uneducated Pare.

What is Taught: William Harvey, during the early 17th century, discovered that blood circulates. He was the first to correctly describe the function of the heart, arteries and veins.
Rome's Galen had presented erroneous ideas regarding the circulatory system, and Harvey was the first to determine that blood is pumped throughout the body via the action of the heart and the venous valves. Therefore, he is regarded as the founder of human physiology.

What Should be Taught: In the 10th century, Islam's ar-Razi wrote an in-depth treatise on the venous system, accurately describing the function of the veins and their valves. Ibn an-Nafs and Ibn al-Quff (13th century) provided full documentation that the blood circulates and correctly described the physiology of the heart and the function of its valves 300 years before Harvey. William Harvey was a graduate of Italy's famous Padua University at a time when the majority of its curriculum was based upon Ibn Sina's and ar-Razi's textbooks.

What is Taught: The first pharmacopeia (book of medicines) was published by a German scholar in 1542. According to World Book Encyclopedia, the science of pharmacology was begun in the 1900's as an off-shoot of chemistry due to the analysis of crude plant materials. Chemists, after isolating the active ingredients from plants, realized their medicinal value.
What Should be Taught:
 According to the eminent scholar of Arab history, Phillip Hitti, the Muslims, not the Greeks or Europeans, wrote the first "modern" pharmacopeia. The science of pharmacology was originated by Muslim physicians during the 9th century. They developed it into a highly refined and exact science.

Muslim chemists, pharmacists and physicians produced thousands of drugs and/or crude herbal extracts one thousand years prior to the supposed birth of pharmacology. During the 14th century Ibn Baytar wrote a monumental pharmacopeia listing some 1400 different drugs. Hundreds of other pharmacopeias were published during the Islamic Era. It is likely that the German work is an offshoot of that by Ibn Baytar, which was widely circulated in Europe.

What is Taught: The discovery of the scientific use of drugs in the treatment of specific diseases was made by Paracelsus, the Swiss-born physician, during the 16th century. He is also credited with being the first to use practical experience as a determining factor in the treatment of patients rather than relying exclusively on the works of the ancients.
What Should be Taught: Ar-Razi, Ibn Sina, al-Kindi, Ibn Rushd, az-Zahrawi, Ibn Zuhr, Ibn Baytar, Ibn al-Jazzar, Ibn Juljul, Ibn al-Quff, Ibn an-Nafs, al-Biruni, Ibn Sahl and hundreds of other Muslim physicians mastered the science of drug therapy for the treatment of specific symptoms and diseases. In fact, this concept was entirely their invention. The word "drug" is derived from Arabic.

Their use of practical experience and careful observation was extensive. Muslim physicians were the first to criticize ancient medical theories and practices. Ar-Razi devoted an entire book as a critique of Galen's anatomy. The works of Paracelsus are insignificant compared to the vast volumes of medical writings and original findings accomplished by the medical giants of Islam.

What is Taught: The first sound approach to the treatment of disease was made by a German, Johann Weger, in the 1500's.

What Should be Taught: Harvard's George Sarton says that modern medicine is entirely an Islamic development and that Setting the Record Straight the Muslim physicians of the 9th through 12th centuries were precise, scientific, rational and sound in their approach.
Johann Weger was among thousands of Europeans physicians during the 15th through 17th centuries who were taught the medicine of ar-Razi and Ibn Sina. He contributed nothing original.

What is Taught: Medical treatment for the insane was modernized by Philippe Pinel when in 1793 he operated France's first insane asylum.
What Should be Taught: As early as the 1lth century, Islamic hospitals maintained special wards for the insane.
They treated them kindly and presumed their disease was real at a time when the insane were routinely burned alive in Europe as witches and sorcerers.
A curative approach was taken for mental illness and, for the first time in history, the mentally ill were treated with supportive care, drugs and psychotherapy.

Every major Islamic city maintained an insane asylum where patients were treated at no charge. In fact, the Islamic system for the treatment of the insane excels in comparison to the current model, as it was more humane and was highly effective as well.

এই নোট পড়ে খারাপ লাগলে নির্দ্বিধায় আমাকে আনফ্রেন্ড করতে পারেনআমার ভেতর থেকে প্রচন্ড তাগিদ না পেলে আমি লিখতে বসিনা। ওটা আমার কাজও না। ঘন্টার পর ঘন্টা কথা বলতেও আমার আপত্তি নেই যতটা আপত্তি এই লিখার ক্ষেত্রে। এই লিখা যখন লিখছি তখন প্রচন্ড রাগে আমার গা জ্বলছে।আমি এত ভূমিকা না করে সরাসরি আসল কথায় আসি। স্পা না করলে কি মেয়েরা মরে যাবে? বাঙ্গালী মেয়ারা যথেষ্ঠ রূপবতী। এই রূপ গত কয়েক বছরে ধুম করে জেগে ওঠেনি। তারা আগেও রূপবতী ছিল এখনো আছে। আমি জানিনা যে স্পা তে এমন কি আছে যে তার রূপে এমন বিশেষ কিছু অ্যাড করবে যা না থাকলে তার জীবন চলবেনা? যার কারনে অন্য একজন মানুষের সামনে আধা নগ্ন হয়ে body message করাতে হবে। লজ্জা শরমের মাথা কি কাঁচাই খেয়ে ফেলছি আমরা?আমাদের মায়েরা ,দাদীরা,নানীরা তো কোনদিন এইসব করেনি। তাতে কি আমাদের বাবারা, নানারা,দাদারা তাদের ছেড়ে চলে গেছে? না তাদের বিয়ে হয়নি? কি ক্ষতি হয়েছে তাদের যারা নিজেদের অন্যের সামনে কাপড় খুলে শরীর মর্দন করান নি?আমি নিজে মেয়ে মানুষ। আমি খুব ভাল করেই জানি মেয়েরা এত সাজ গোজ কেন করে। খুবই সিম্পল উত্তর। মানুষ তাদের দিকে তাকাবে , প্রশংসা করবে। কার না ভাল লাগে প্রশংসা শুনতে! আমারো ভাল লাগে।কিন্তু আপারা দুনিয়ায় খালি আমরা মেয়েরাই নাই। আমাদের ভাইরাও আছে। সৃষ্টিগতভাবে যারা আপনাদের উপর এবং আপনারা তাদের উপর দূর্বল। কিন্তু এইটা ভাইদের ক্ষেত্রে একটু না অনেক বেশি। এই কথাগুলা বলতে আমার খুবই খারাপ লাগে। অনেক বেশি লজ্জা লাগে এই জন্য যে এত ব্যাখ্যা করে আমার বোনদেরকে এসব আমার বলতে হয়। আমি বাংলায় এসব লিখতে পারবনা।Most of the man gets sexually aroused when---আপনি টাইট ফিটিং কাপড় পরেন।আপনি ওড়না পরেন না/ গলায় ঝুলায় রাখেন/ একপাশে ঝুলায় রাখেন।আপনি যখন অর্ধস্বচ্ছ কাপড় পরেন।আপনার পেট/পা/পীঠ যখন দেখা যায়।আপনি যখন ঠোঁট রাঙ্গান।আপনি যখন চোখে স্মোকি সাজ পরেন।আরও শত শত কারন থাকতে পারে।কি ? মনে হচ্ছে যে ছিঃ ছিঃ ছেলেরা এত খারাপ! তাইনা? THEY ARE CREATED BY ALLAAH LIKE THIS.শুধু আল্লাহ্‌র ভয়/সমাজের ভয়/ ভালত্ব/ সুস্থ বিবেক আছে দেখেই এখনো কোন ভাই এই ধরণের আপাদের রাস্তায় ধরে কষে কষে কয়েকটা চড় বসান নি।[আল’হামদুলিল্লাহ। এই বিপদ আমার উপর আসার আগেই আল্লাহ্‌ আমাকে রক্ষা করেছেন।একবার কি হল, তখনো আমি ঠিকমত হিজাব করিনা, মাথায় একটু আধটু কাপড় দেই। একদিন প্রচন্ড গরমের মধ্যে ক্লাসে গেছি। মাথায় কাপড় দেইনি। আমাদের সাথে সিনিয়র অফিসাররাও ক্লাস করতেন। এঁদের মধ্যে একজন ভাই পুরো ক্লাসের মধ্যে আমাকে এমন ঝাড়ি দিলেন! টিচার ছিল, সব স্টুডেন্ট ছিল। আমি খুব কষ্ট পেয়েছিলাম, ক্লাস থেকে বের হয়ে গেছি। অনেক কান্নাকাটি করেছি। ভাইয়া আমাকে বলেছিলেন, "The Jews know our scriptures better than us, but they do not follow.[Inspite of knowing about hijab you don't wear it properly,so] Do you think you are better than that Jew?" এই একটা কথা আমার ভেতরটা কাঁপিয়ে দিয়েছিল। আমি বলেছিলাম হিজাব পরলে আমার কষ্ট হয়, দম বন্ধ হয়ে যায়, এ সি রুমেও ঘামতে থাকি। উনি বললেন, " Did you ask Allaah to help you with this?" আসলেই তো, যার জন্যে হিজাব করছি তাঁর কাছেই তো সাহায্য চাইনি। আমি আর কোন উত্তর দিতে পারিনি ভাইয়াকে। উনি ঠিক কথাই বলেছিলেন আমাকে। হয়ত রুক্ষভাবে বলেছেন,কিন্তু ওই সময় আমার জন্য ওগুলো থাপ্পড়ের কাজ করেছে, আল'হামদুলিল্লাহ এখন তীব্র গরমেও মাথা থেকে পা পর্যন্ত ঢেকে রাখলেও আমার কোন অসুবিধা হয় না। আমি গরম লাগার দোহাই দিই। কিন্তু ওইদিন কি হবে যেদিন সূর্য মাথার এক হাত উপরে থাকবে। আল্লাহ্‌ মাফ করুন। ]আপারা,আরো কয়েকটা uncensored কথা বলি। এটা জানেন তো যে মানুষ(অধিকাংশ) খুব সহজেই বোর হয়ে যায় আর নতুন কিছু খুঁজতে থাকে যা তাকে আনন্দ দেবে। পশিমাদের মধ্যে হোমসেক্সুলালিটি এত বেশি এর কারন নিয়ে কখনো চিন্তা করেছেন? কেন যেখানে চাইলেই মানুষ আপনার বিছানায় আসতে রাজী সেখানে কেন মেয়ে মেয়ের সাথে ছেলে ছেলের সাথে যেতে চায়? এরা নারী দেহ দেখতে দেখতে ক্লান্ত। এদের রূচি আস্তে আস্তে বিকৃত হয়ে গেছে। এখন তারা নিজেদের মধ্যে থেকেই সংগী খোঁজে। আল্লাহ্‌ মাফ করুন। হেদায়েত দিন।আপারা, আমার লেখা এলোমেলো হচ্ছে আমি জানি। রেগে আছি তো তাই।একটা কথা বলি শোনেন। আপনি মানুষকে যা দেখাবেন তা দেখেই তারা আপনার মূল্যায়ন করবে। মানুষের শরীরের সৌন্দর্য এক সময় শেষ হয়ে যায়। তাই আজকে যারা আপনাকে বলছে, তোকে তো দারুন লাগছে/ আপনার ফেসবুকের ছবিতে প্রশংসার পর প্রশংসা করে যাচ্ছে...... আর এই সব দেখে আপনি খুশিতে ডগমগ করেন।।আজ থেকে ২০ বছর পরের কথা চিন্তা করেন...এই ছেলেরা তখন ৩৮/৪০ ....তখন আপনার প্রশংসা করবেনা। তারা কিন্তু ঠিকই ১৬-২৫ দেরকেই খুঁজবে।কিন্তু আপারা, একটা কথা জানেন? মনের সৌন্দর্য শেষ হয় না। মন জরাগ্রস্ত হয়না। একটা সুন্দর মন, শালীন দেহ সর্ব কালে সর্ব যুগে প্রশংসিত। আজকের বোরকা পরা মেয়েকে দেখলে যেমন আপনার যারা প্রশংসা করে সেই ছেলেরাও মাথা নামিয়ে নেয়,আমার দাড়ি টুপি ওয়ালা ভাইরাও নামিয়ে নেয়। আজ থেকে ২০ বছর পর দেখলেও তারা দৃষ্টি নামিয়ে নিবে, ইনশা’আল্লাহ। আমার এই বোনেরা আজকেই সম্মানিত। কালকেও থাকবে ইনশাআল্লাহ্‌। আর আপনাদের কি হবে? আজকে আপনারা যাদের চোখ জুড়াচ্ছেন কাল তারা আপনার দিকে তাকাবেই না। আর সম্মান??? সেটা আজকেও কেউ আপনাদের করেনা, ভবিষ্যতে করবে কি আল্লাহ্‌ ভাল জানেন।আপারা, চাকরানী চেনেন??? দাসী চেনেন??? আপনার হলেন পুরুষদের চাকরানী নয়তো মেকাপের দাসী। ঘন্টার পর ঘন্টা সময় নিয়ে এত সাজ গোজ যে করেন...পরে তো সেগুলো তত কষ্ট করেই ঘষে ঘষে তুলে ফেলতে হয়। কি লাভ এই কৃত্তিমতার?এই যে একেকজন ডাক্তারি, ইঞ্জিনিয়ারিং , ভার্সিটিতে পড়ছেন অথচ নিরেট মূর্খের মত আচরণ কেন করছেন?আপনার এত এত বিদ্যা আপনাকে কেন রঙ চঙ্গের আশ্রয় নেয়া থেকে বাঁচাতে পারেনা???কেন অফিসে/অফিসিয়াল কনফারেন্স/কনভোকেশন/নবীন বরণ/ ফেয়ারওয়েলে যাবার আগে আপনার নিজের চেহারায় এত ঘষা মাজা করতে হয়? এসব যায়গার তো আপনি আপনার লেখাপড়ার কল্যানেই যাচ্ছেন তাই না? তাহলে কেন সব কিছু ছাপিয়ে আপনার সাজ গোজ সেখানে প্রাধান্য পাবে???কি করলেন এত লেখাপড়া করে যা আপনার মানসিকতাকে বদলাতে পারেনি?দেশের সর্বোচ্চ বিদ্যাপীঠে পড়েও কেন আপনাকে ছোট ছোট কাপড়, কিছু রঙ চঙ্গের উপর নির্ভরশীল হতে হয়। বলতে পারেন?আপারা বলেন তো দেখি আপনার এক মাসের পার্লারের খরচ দিয়ে কয়জন ক্ষুধার্ত মানুষকে খাওয়ানো যায়? আচ্ছা ধরলাম চালের কেজি ৫০ টাকা। ২০০০ টাকা হলে এক মণ চাল হয়। একটা ছোট পরিবারের ১৫-২০ দিনের খাবার ব্যবস্থা হয়ে যায়। কোনদিন ৫০০ টাকা খরচ করে ১০ কেজি চাল কিনে কোন দরিদ্র মানুষকে দেয়ার কথা ভেবেছেন কখনো? অথচ আপনার পা ঘষে দিলেই আপনি ৫০০ টাকা পার্লারে দিয়ে আসেন। কি আশচর্য! আপনি যখন পা দলাই মলাই করে নিচ্ছে তখন কোথাও কোন সনাবরু না খেতে পেয়ে গলায় দড়ি দিচ্ছে।আপনি যখন সেজে গুজে বন্ধু বান্ধবের সাথে নবীন বরণ বা ফেয়ারওয়েল এ নাচানাচি করছেন তখন আপনার বোন আফিয়া সিদ্দিকা/ফাতিমেকে প্রতি রাতে ১০ জন মার্কিন সৈন্য ধর্ষন করছে।RAPE. কখনো এদের জন্য আপনার চোখে পানি এসেছে? একবার চিন্তা করুন তো, আপনাকে বানরের মত খঁচায় রাখা হয়েছে যেখানে আপনি সোজা হয়ে দাঁড়াতেও পারেন না, আপনার গায়ে কাপড় পর্যন্ত রাখা হয় নি, আপনার সামনে আপনার দুই সন্তানকে জবাই করা হয়েছে,আপনার একটা একটা করে চুল টেনে টেনে উপড়ে ফেলা হয়েছে, আপনার পেটে গুলি করা হয়েছে, ইলেক্ট্রিক শক দেয়া হয়েছে, তার সাথে সাথে যখন তখন আপনাকে ধর্ষন করা হচ্ছে। কি ...বেশি বলে ফেললাম???__________________________________________________________

একটি হাতে লেখা দলিল সম্প্রতি ইরাকের আবু গারীব কারাগার থেকে উদ্ধার হয়। ফাতেমা ঐ এলাকার একজন খ্যাতিমান মুজাহিদের বোন। আমেরিকান সৈন্যরা কিছুদিন পূর্বে ঐ মুজাহিদের বাড়িতে হটাত হামলা চালায়। কিন্তু তাকে পায় না। তারা তার বোনকে জোরপূর্বক ধরে নিয়ে যায় যেন ঐ মুজাহিদ নিজ থেকে ধরা দেয়।ফাতেমার মূল চিঠিটি এখানে দেয়া হল যা মাফকারাট আল ইসলামে(আরবী নিউজ এজন্সি) ইংরেজী অনুবাদসহ আরবীতে ছাপা হয়েছিল।ফাতেমার চিঠি“পরম করুনাময় আল্লাহতা’য়ালার নামে(হে মুহাম্মদ) তুমি বলো, তিনিই আল্লাহ তিনি এক একক। তিনি কারোর মুখাপেক্ষী নন, তার থেকে কেউ জন্ম নেয়নি, আর তিনিও কারো থেকে জন্ম গ্রহন করেননি। আর তার সমতুল্য দ্বিতীয় কেউ নেয়।(সূরা আল-এখলাস)আমি আল্লাহর গ্রন্থ আল-কোরআন থেকে হতে এই পবিত্র সূরাটি পছন্দ করেছি কারন এর দারুন প্রভাব পড়েছে আমার উপর এবং আপনাদের সবার উপরে ও বিশ্বাসীদের হদয়ের এক প্রকার ভয় ও শ্রদ্ধা মিশ্রিত বোধের জন্ম দেবে। আমার ভাই মুজাহীদিন আল্লাহর পথে আছে।আপনাদের আমি কি বলবো?আমি আপনাদের বলছি : আমাদের গর্ভ বানর ও শূকুর জাতীয় লম্পটদের সন্তানে ভর্তি হয়ে আছে। যারা আমাদের ধর্ষণ করেছে। অথবা (আমি) আপনাদের বলতে পারি যে, তারা আমাদের দেহকে বিকৃত করেছে। আমাদের মুখমন্ডল জলসে দিয়েছে এবং আমাদের ঘাড়ে ঝোলানো কোরআনের ছোট কপিটি অযথা ছিড়ে ছিন্ন ভিন্ন করে ফেলেছে। আল্লাহু আকবার, আপনারা কি পরিস্থিতি অনুদাবন করতে পারছেন না? এটা সত্য আপনারা জানেন না আমাদের সাথে কি ঘটেছে। আমরা আপনাদের বোন। আল্লাহ হিসাব নিকাসের সময় ভবিষ্যতে এ সম্পর্কে আপনাদের জিজ্ঞাসা করবে। আল্লাহর কসম কারাগারে আসা পর্যন্ত আমাদের এমন কোন রাত কাটেনি যে রাতে বানর ও শুকুর জাতীয় অমানুষরা আমাদের উপর ঝাপিয়ে পড়েনি। তারা তাদের পূর্ণ স্বাদ মিটিয়ে নিস্তেজ হওয়া অবধি আমাদের দেহকে ছিন্ন বিচ্ছিন্ন করতে থাকে। আমরাই তারা যারা আল্লাহর ভয়ে সব সময় সতীত্বকে কে রক্ষা করে এসেছি। আল্লাহকে ভয় করুন। আমাদের মেরে ফেলুন। আমাদের ধংস করে দিন। তাদের আনন্দ উপকরন হিসাবে আমাদের রেখে যাবেন না। এভাবে সর্বশক্তিমান আল্লাহর মহাকৃতিত্ব মর্যাদা সম্পন্ন করা হবে। আমাদের ব্যাপারে আল্লাহকে ভয় করুন। তাদের কামান ও উড়োজাহাজ গুলো বাইরে রেখে আসুন। আবু গারীব কারাগারে আমাদের কাছে আসুন। আমি আপনাদের ধর্ম বোন। তারা আমায় একদিন নয়বারেরও বেশী ধর্ষন করেছে। আপনারা কি অনুধাবন করতে পারছেন? চিন্তা করুন আপনাদের এজন বোন ধর্ষিত হচ্ছে। আপনারা কেন ভাবতে পারছেন না আমি আপনাদের বোন? আমার সাথে আরো ১৩ জন মেয়ে আছে। সবাই অবিবাহিত। সবাই সবার সামনে প্রকাশ্য ধর্ষিত হচ্ছে। তারা আমাদের নামায পড়তে দেয় না। তারা আমাদের পোশাকগুলো নিয়ে নিয়েছে। আমাদের কাপড় পরতে দেয়না। আমাদের মধ্যে একজন মেয়ে আত্নহত্যার প্রতিজ্ঞা করেছে। তাই আমি এই চিঠিটি লিখছি। সে নৃশংসভাবে ধর্ষিত হয়েছে। একজন সৈনিক তাকে ধর্ষনের পর তার বুক ও উরুতে আঘাত করেছে। সে অবিশ্বাস্য অত্যাচারের দ্বারা তাকে ভোগ করেছে। মেয়েটি তার মাথা জেলের দেয়ালে সাথে আঘাত করতে লাগল যতক্ষন না তার মৃত্যু হয়, মেয়েটি নিজেকে আর ধরে রাখতে পারলো না। যদিও ইসলামে আত্নহত্যা নিষিদ্ধ। কিন্তু আমি তাকে ক্ষমা করে দিয়েছি। আশা করছি আল্লাহ তাকে ক্ষমা করবেন। কারন তিনি(আল্লাহ) সবার প্রতি অসীম দয়ালু। ভাই আপনাদের আবারও বলছি আল্লাহকে ভয় করুন। আমাদের মেরে ফেলুন। তাহলেই আমরা হয়ত শান্তি পাব। সাহায্য করুন। সাহায্য করুন। সাহায্য করুন।ড. আফিয়া সিদ্দিকা আন্তর্জাতিক খ্যাতি সম্পন্ন স্নায়ু বিজ্ঞানী। অসামান্য ধীসম্পন্ন পি.এইচ.ডি ডিগ্রীধারী এ মহিলার সম্মানসূচক অন্যান্য ডিগ্রী ও সার্টিফিকেট রয়েছে প্রায় ১৪৪টি। যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের ব্রন্ডেইস বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় ও হার্ভার্ড বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় তাঁকে Neurology বিষয়ে ডক্টরেট ডিগ্রী প্রদান করে। তিনি হাফিযে কুর‘আন ও আলিমা। পবিত্র কুর‘আন ও হাদীসে পারদর্শিনী এ মহিলা ব্যক্তিগত জীবনে অত্যন্ত দ্বীনদার ও পরহেযগার। ইসলামী আদর্শ, ঐতিহ্য ও সংস্কৃতির প্রতি রয়েছে তাঁর স্ট্রং কমিটমেন্ট। মার্কিন গোয়েন্দা সংস্থা এফ.বি.আই পাকিস্তানী কর্তৃপক্ষের সহযোগিতায় আল কায়েদার সঙ্গে যোগাযোগ থাকার কথিত অভিযোগে ২০০৩ সালে ড. আফিয়াকে তাঁর তিন সন্তান আহমদ, সুলায়মান, ও মরিয়মসহ করাচীর রাস্তা থেকে অপহরণ করে। পাকিস্তানের কোন কারাগারে না রেখে এবং পাকিস্তানী আদালতে উপস্থাপন না করে পাঁচ বছর ধরে তাঁকে আফগানিস্তানের বাগরাম সামরিক ঘাঁটিতে বন্দী করে রাখা হয়। এরপর চলে তাঁর উপর অমানুষিক শারীরিক, মানসিক ও যৌন নির্যাতন। বাগরামে কুখ্যাত মার্কিন কারাগার থেকে মুক্তি পাওয়া ব্যক্তিরা বলেছেন, ‘নির্যাতনের সময় একজন নারী বন্দির আর্তচিৎকার অন্য বন্দিদের সহ্য করাও কষ্টকর ছিল.........।দেখুন আফিয়ার ছবি। অত্যাচারের আগের ও পরের ছবি।

যারা কষ্ট করে লেখাটি পড়লেন সবাইকে ধন্যবাদ । সবার কাছেই আমার অনুরোধ আপনার সব বন্ধুদেরও লেখাটি পড়ান। জোর করে হলেও পড়ান । কারন শুধু আপনি ভাল হলেই হবেনা, ঘুণে ধরা সমাজকে বাঁচাতে হলে সবাইকেই জানাতে হবে। যারা ভুল পথে ছিলেন তারা সঠিক পথের দিশা পাবেন লেখাটি পড়ে। তাই লেখাটি আমাদের গ্রুপের মাধ্যমে শেয়ার করতে পারেন, কিংবা নিজের নাম দিয়ে অন্য কোথাও পোস্টও করতে পারেন, কারো কোন আপত্তি নাই। কারন লেখিকা হাততালি পাওয়ার আশায় পোস্টটি লেখেন নাই। লেখেছেন মানুষকে ভুল পথ থেকে ফেরাতে। তাই সবাই লেখাটি শেয়ার করেন, প্রিয় মানুষকে সঠিক পথের সন্ধান দিন।
